Join us in the
Junior Wrangler and Sidekick
Program
The Junior
Wrangler and Sidekick Program of the R-Wild Horse Ranch is committed to providing an
opportunity for the R-Ranch youth and adults to learn the basics of
horsemanship and related barn and ranch maintenance, in a safe and
supportive environment. Starting from the ground up, instruction
will be offered to allow progressive learning of skills so each
participant can eventually contribute to the proper care of R-horses
and assisting R-wranglers.
Level 1:
Junior Wranglers and Sidekicks will . . .
learn barn rules
and etiquette, and natural horse temperament, and will perform basic
barn chores such as cleaning the water trough, sweep the barn alleys
and ranch horse tack room, and removing manure from the stalls and the
tie line.
Level 2:
Junior Wranglers and Sidekicks will . . .
learn proper names
of the parts of a horse, and safely halter, lead, and tie a
horse. They will also learn the parts of a saddle and bridle, and will
assist in keeping them clean.
Level 3:
Junior Wranglers and Sidekicks will . . .
catch, bridle and
saddle horses, groom and bathe horses, and check exterior fences for
safety. Some activities at this level will only be performed by adults
or with direct adult supervision.
Level 4:
Junior Wranglers and Sidekicks will . . .
learn basic health
and nutrition of the horse, and perform basic wound care. Level 4 Jr.
Wranglers will also participate in a leadership role and helping with
R-Ranch functions. As in level 3, some activities will only be
performed by adults or with direct adult supervision.
Junior Wranglers
and Sidekicks will receive instruction, pass a brief
written test, and complete a specified number of hours assisting with
barn chores and horse care before progressing to the next level. All
activities and individual participation occur at the discretion of barn
staff.
To become a
Junior Wrangler or Sidekick, please complete the application form
and return it to the ranch.
